針對成人大學聯考閱讀理解題的.特點，考生需要考慮的是如何提高閱讀理解能力。所謂閱讀理解能力，通常指兩個方面：其一是能夠做到準確、有效，換句話說，就是在單位時間內儘可能獲得最多的資訊，而理解錯誤則減至最少;其二是能夠再現文章的內容以表明自己的理解程度，譬如能夠總結短文的主旨大意，說出文章中隱含的意思，體味作者的意圖，猜測文中生詞的意思等。前者對於解答客觀題、細節題、數字計算題大有幫助;而後者則對解答主觀題、推理歸納題、邏輯判斷題、句型轉換題、詞義解釋題有所啟迪。
考生須知，語言並非影響閱讀理解能力的唯一因素。有的人英語說得很好，寫得也不錯，但在做閱讀理解題時卻常常丟分。究其原因，不外乎有以下幾種：
1、有些人“只見樹木，不見森林”，他們讀得很慢很仔細，注意力集中在一個個點上，但對全文的整體意思不能很好地把握。
2、還有些人讀得很快，他們可能抓住全文的大概意思，卻忽視了文章中的某些細節，尤其是一些很重要的小詞(如情態動詞、連詞或否定意義的詞等)。
3、還有些人憑著自己的經驗，想當然辦事。他們可能對文章中所談的事有所瞭解，但他們在讀這類文章時往往不加深究，以自己的體驗代替文章的敘述。
除了上述一些原因影響閱讀理解外，還有一些原因則出在文章的本身或題目的設問角度上。如：
1、文章的句子很長，結構很複雜，單詞基本上都認識，整句話的含義卻難以把握。
2、有些文章的表述不直接，真正想說的意思隱含在字裡行間。考生遇到這類文章必須細緻研讀，從字裡行間將作者沒有直接說出的意思找出來。
3、文章中的生詞影響考生對文章的理解，考生必須掌握依據上下文猜出詞意的本領。
4、有些作者喜歡玩弄辭藻，文章非常冗長，考生則必須學會抓其大意。
5、閱讀理解題設問的角度很刁，考生不知如何下手。
