In many countries around the world May 1 is a holiday. Labour Day, or Workers’ Day, is an international holiday that honours working men and women, and the jobs they do.

During the late 1880s, in many parts of the world, people worked for fourteen to sixteen hours a day in factories, and earned very little money. In the United States and Canada, working people got together to try to make their workplaces better. These groups of people formed unions (團體). The union leaders asked company directors for shorter work days and higher salaries (工資), but many of them refused to accept their ideas.

On May 1, 1886, men and women in the United States and Canada stopped work and marched through cities and towns to try and force bosses to let them work an eight-hour day. In the city of Chicago, several people died in fights with the police. Over the next few years, people in cities around the world stopped working every May 1 to honour workers everywhere. Life for Cathy Taylor’s three children is very busy. Their school days are busy enough. After school, though, Cathy takes the two boys from football to basketball. Then she has to take her daughter to piano lessons. The tired children don’t get home until 7 pm. They have a quick supper, and it’s time for homework.

The Taylors are like many American and British parents. They take their children from activity to activity, and try to fit as much as possible into their kids’ lives. Doctors say many children are under too much pressure. Teachers complain about teaching tired kids in the classroom.

Most children take part in after-school clubs. Activities include sports, language learning, music and math classes. Pushy parents are nothing new, but now parents seem to push their children a lot more. Parents see other children doing a lot of things, and they feel their own children should do the same.

Linda Miller, a mother of three in London, knows all about such pressure. “In some families, competition starts from a very young age,” she says. “Mothers send their kids to all kinds of classes when they are very young. And they are always comparing them with other children. It’s crazy. People shouldn’t push their kids so hard.

Dr Alice Green agrees. She also says that these children may find it hard to think for themselves when they are older. “Parents are trying to plan their kids’ lives for them. When these kids are adults, they might find it difficult to plan things for themselves.” Parents should learn to give their kids a bit more time to themselves. On the one hand, children need organized activities. On the other hand, they also need time and freedom to relax, and they need time to do things by themselves.

36. Cathy Taylor sends her daughter to .

D. Because they can’t plan things for themselves.

38. From the passage, we know children take part in after-school activities because .

A. they have interest in them B. their teachers tell them to do so

C. their parents push them to do so D. they see other children doing these things

39. Doctors say many children are under too much pressure. Here “pressure” means .

A. 學業 B. 壓力 C. 負擔 D. 競爭

40. The writer probably thinks that parents should .

A. compare their children with others

B. plan their children’s lives for them

C. take their children to different classes

D. give children time and let them do things by themselves

We all dream about things that we would like to do and things we hope to achieve in the future. But are everybody’s dreams the same? Here are some of the findings of a survey about hopes and dreams, and thousands of students across China took part in it.

What are the hopes of teenagers?

We received several different answers to the question: what would you like to do after finishing your education? It seems some students would like to start work as soon as possible, so that they can help provide better lives for their parents. Other students hope to continue studying after finishing school and to go to university. Although money is important, many teenagers said they want to do jobs they enjoy. According to the survey, the most popular choice of job is computer programming.

What are the dreams of teenagers?

Teenagers have all kinds of dreams. Some are more realistic than others. For example, many students said they would like to be volunteers if Beijing could hold the World Cup, maybe working as translators or tour guides. And quite a few said they dream of going to the moon one day.

According to the survey, less realistic dreams are also common, but many students reported that they were willing to work hard to achieve their dreams. Quite a few dream of becoming famous, perhaps famous sports people or singers. Some said they’d like to go on exciting trips; one students said she’d love to sail across the Pacific Ocean. And then there are dreams that are impossible; three students said they’d like to be able to fly!

Conclusion

It was clear from the survey that teenagers have similar hopes. It seems that most students hope to have a good education and find a good job. On the other hand, students dream of very different things: good things, and even crazy things. It is very important to dream, so hold on your dreams; one day they may just come true.

TONY: Well, food that is bad for you can taste good! But I prefer not to eat much food that is fried, like, er, French fries. Do you eat fast food, Laura?

TONY: Hm, yes. And I think most people are in agreement that fruit and vegetables are good for health. But, um, I would say that fast food itself isn’t always bad for you, but too much of it is not good.

LAURA: Actually, did you know that it’s been found in laboratory testing that some types of oil are really bad for us? So I don’t eat anything that’s been cooked in oil. People who eat a balanced diet should be healthier than those who only eat biscuits and hamburgers, shouldn’t they?
