A.準確判斷定語從句所修飾的物件

由於定語從句與其所修飾的物件之間常有分割成分,而該分割成分中與定語從句緊挨著的名詞常常會被誤認為是定語從句的先行詞。因此遇到這種結構一定要根據上下文和常識進行判斷。

We may define chemistry as the science in which we deal with the chemical change in matter as a result of which it is possible to form a new substance.

本句有兩個由which引導的定語從句:第一個定語從句修飾的物件是science而不是chemistry;第二個定語從句修飾的物件是chemical change 而不是result或matter

B.要注意區分從句的層次

定語從句是最可能出現巢狀結構的。一句話中往往包括好幾個定語從句,這些從句有時是相互並列的.關係,有時是巢狀關係。分析句子的時候應注意區分。

The child who is raised in an environment where there are many stimuli which develop his or her capacity for appropriate responses will experience greatly intellectual development.

本句主語和謂語之間有三個定語從句,第一層是who is raised in an environmen,修飾的是the child ;第二層是where there are many stimuli ,修飾的是environment;第三層是which develop his or her capacity for appropriate responses ,修飾的是stimuli 。三個層次一層套一層。

【例題】

1. Libraries made education possible, and education in its turn added to libraries; the growth of knowledgefollowed a kind of compound-interest law, which was greatly enhanced by the invention of printing.

要點:從內容上分析,which修飾 the growth of knowledge
