定語從句中that與where篇一
有兩個判定方法：
1.看被定語從句所修飾的先行詞（名詞/代詞）能不能直接和從句相連.
如果可以直接和從句其他成分相連,無須補上介詞,則用that/which；
如果需要額外補上介詞才能放在定語從句中,則用where.
如：This is the city (which/thatI stayed in last year).
把先行詞the city放入後面的定語從句,為：
I stayed in (the city) last year.
the city直接做介詞in的賓語,所以用which/that.
再如：This is the city (whereI stayed last year).
把先行詞the city放入定語從句,需要補上介詞in方可,即為：
I stayed (in the city) last year.
所以使用where或in which.
2.看定語從句是缺少地點狀語還是缺少主語/賓語/表語.
如果缺少地點狀語,用where；
如果只缺少主語/賓語/表語,則用which/that.
如：This is the city (which/that) I visited last year.
從句I visited last year中,及物動詞visited後面缺少一個賓語,所以用which/that；
再如：This is the city (where) I lived last year.
I lived last year中,缺少地點狀語in the city,所以用where或in which
其實上面兩種方法是一樣的,不知道樓主能不能看明白?

你的第一個問題中的happen在句中表示“碰巧”，屬於句型It happensthat...,意為“……碰巧發生”。如：
It happenedthatI saw her standing by the window. 我碰巧看見她站在窗邊。
It happenedthatI didn't have any time then. 我當時碰巧沒時間。
happen常見的用法還有：sth. happens to sb. 某人碰巧發生某事；sb. happens to do sth. 某人碰巧做某事。
注：當happen表示“發生”時，主語就是所發生的事情。如：
The story happened on a cold winter morning. 故事發生在一個寒冷冬天的早晨。
下面我們再來看看你的第二個問題：如何區別定語從句的關係詞是使用that還是where。where和that引導限制性定語從句時，都常用來修飾表示地點的名詞，但如果前面的名詞是表示地點（定語從句中的動詞動作所發生的地點）時，用where；如果該名詞（先行詞）作定語從句中動詞的賓語時，則使用that。如：
I know of a placewherewe can have fun. 我知道一個我們可以玩得開心的地方。(a place表示地點，作狀語，即：we can have fun in some place)
Is there a shop aroundwherewe can buy fruit? 附近有什麼商店可以買到水果嗎？(a shop就是地點，說明buy fruit的地方，作狀語)
He bought the factorythathe visited last year. 他買下了他去年參觀過的那家工廠。（the factory就是visited的賓語，表示參觀的物件）
同時，where也可引導非限制性定語從句，而習慣上that則不能這樣使用。如：
They have gone to Beijing,wherethey will stay for a week. 他
