提起否定詞，不少同學自然會想到no, not, never等詞。然而聽力測試中的否定概念並非侷限於此。一些含否定意義的副詞、形容詞、代詞、連詞、動詞、名詞及前後綴也常在句子中間執著地表示否定的含義，如rarely, hardly, seldom, scarcely, few, little, none, nobody, nothing, neither, nor, beyond, fail, miss, refuse, dislike, impossible等。但在這些否定詞中，對否定物件的否定程度卻有不同，有的是完全否定，有的是部分否定，有的否定大部分，還有的否定小部分。我們應體會其中的差異從而準確地理解語義。
【例10】
When she heard that news, she could hardly control her feelings.
(當她聽到那訊息時，她幾乎不能抑制住她的感情。) 句中的hardly是半否定詞，意思是幾乎不，簡直不，對could control作大部分否定。
【例1】
Nobody believes what he said.
(沒有人相信他說的話。)句中nobody是完全否定詞，將否定物件全部加以否定。
【例2】
Professor Wang seldom watches TV at night.
(王教授晚上很少看電視。)seldom是半否定詞，與only occasionally 同義。對watch作部分否定，意思是王教授有時在晚上還是看電視的，但只是偶爾看看。
【例3】
M: Have you read anything good recently?
W: Nothing you would like.
Q: What does the woman mean?
女方在回答時的nothing為完全否定。句義為沒有你感興趣的東西，也就是我愛看的東西，你不會喜歡。理解到這個含義，就能選出正確的.答案了。
【例4】
M: What kind of drink would you like? Coke or coffee?
W: Neither, but actually I prefer Chinese tea to any other drink.
Q: What does the woman mean?
女方在句中用的neither是對coke和coffee兩者的否定。很顯然，她所喜歡的飲料是tea。
【例5】
The good and the beautiful do not always go together.
(善與美不總是並存的。)not always為部分否定，與sometimes同義，為有時、不經常的意思。
