A. 如上所述，名詞的所有格形式主要用於人、國家或動物，但也可用於下列場合：
1. 表示船隻及其部件的所屬關係：
the ship’s bell船上的鐘
the yacht’s mast遊艇的桅杆
2 .表示屬於飛機、火車、汽車以及其他車輛或飛行器及其部件的所屬關係，雖然of+名詞結構用在這些場合較為穩妥：
a glider’s wings／the wings of a glider滑翔機的機翼
the train’s heating system／the heating system of the train火車的供暖系統
3. 表示時間：
a week’s holiday一週的休假
today’s paper今天的報紙
tomorrow’s weather明天的天氣
in two years’ time兩年的時間之內
ten minutes’ break十分鐘休息
two hours’ delay兩小時的耽擱
也可以用a ten－minute break，a two-hour delay：
We have ten minutes’break／a ten－minute break．
我們有十分鐘的休息時間。
4. 用於錢+ worth結構中：
￡l’s worth of stamps面值一英鎊的郵票
ten dollars’worth of ice－cream值十美元的冰淇淋
5. 用於for+名詞的所有格形式+sake結構中：
for heaven’s sake看在老天爺的面上
for goodness’sake看在上帝的份上
6. 用於下列說法中：
a stone’s throw 投石之遙（很近）
journey’s end路程盡頭
the water’s edge水邊
7. 可以說 a winter’s day 或a winter day（一個冬日）及asummer’s day或a summer day（一個夏日）；但是，不可以用spring（春季）和autumn（秋季）當所有格形式，除非把它們人格化：Autumn’s return（秋天的'來到）。
8 .一些特定的名詞用其所有格形式時，可省去後面的名詞。
a／the baker’s／butcher’s／chemist’s／florist’s的意思是麵包師／屠夫／藥劑師／花匠的店鋪。同樣，a／the house agent’s／travelagent’s是房產經紀公司／旅行社的意思，而the dentist’s／doctor’s／vet’s是牙科診所／醫生診所／獸醫診所的意思：
You can buy it at the chemist’s．
這個你可以在藥房裡買到。
He’s going to the dentist’s．
他去牙科診所了。
一些商業家的名稱也可以這樣用：

一些有名氣的商場等的店號就用姓氏+所有格形式，但有時把
一撇（’）都省略了：
Foyles福葉爾商店
Harrods哈洛德百貨公司
有時人名也可以這樣用，以表示某某人的家：
We had lunch at Bill’s．

We met at Ann’s．

B. of+名詞結構表示所屬關係：
1. 當表示擁有者的名詞由短語或從句修飾時用of+名詞結構：
The boys ran about，obeying the directions of a man with a whistle．
男孩子們按帶哨子的男人的指示四處奔跑。
I took the advice of a couple I met on the train and hired a car．
我聽從了在火車上遇見的一對夫婦的建議，租了一輛小汽車。
2. 除了上述A中所列的名詞外，無生命的擁有者也要用of+名詞結構表示：
the walls of the town城市的城牆
the roof of the church教堂的屋頂
the keys of the car小汽車的鑰匙
然而名詞1＋of+名詞2常常可以用名詞2+名詞1來代替：
the town walls城市的城牆
the church roof教堂的屋頂
the car keys 小汽車的鑰匙
這時第一個名詞變成了一種形容詞，不用複數形式：
the roofs of the church=the church roofs教堂的屋頂（參見第16節。）但名詞+of+名詞結構不能都用這種方法來代替，在沒有把握的情況下最好還是用of結構。
