In an experiment 6 by a French laboratory, 12 volunteers watched an image while researchers 7 their brain activity. The volunteers were told to first concentrate on how long a(an)

8 stayed on the screen, then focus on the color of the image, and thirdly, study both the 9

The results showed that the brain was 10 when the volunteers paid attention to more subjects. It is thought that if the brain is 11 , focusing on many aspects of a task, it has to spread its resources, and pays less attention to the clock. Therefore, time passes without us really 12 it, and seems to go quickly. If the brain is not so active, it devotes all its energies to monitoring the 13

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A、B、C和D項中,選出最佳選項,並在答題卡上將該項塗黑。

A

I received a call today asking if I would be willing to bring food to a family in need. The mother was having a major operation and would be lying down for several weeks. Of course, I responded with an immediate "Yes!". As I planned the meal in my head, I thought of how many times over the years I had been asked to prepare food. I have done so countless times with a very open heart.

But the truly amazing thing is that I have received double over the course of my life. When my mother died, our house was filled with fresh dinners for weeks. A woman from the church of our community stopped by each evening with some food. The gift of food was her small way of trying to ease our pain.

Later in my life, when I was on bed resting during my pregnancy (懷孕) with twins, women of the church again stepped in to help. They arranged babysitting for my two-year-old daughter, and brought lovely dinners to our house. Even when I was put in the hospital, my husband would bring cooked meals to my hospital room. How we relied on these dinners to feed my tired husband and young daughter!

Food is all about comfort. It feeds our bodies, but it can also feed our souls. When you hear people talking about their favorite holidays, it usually includes their feelings connected with sharing food. I know that I will have many more opportunities in my lifetime to prepare food for others. It is truly a gift I look forward to preparing and delivering to someone in need.

We live in a world of things. I realized this when I left my job after 17 years. I carried the contents of my office home in three garbage bags. Every time I tried to sort through those bags to get rid of any of it, I was afraid I would need this or that later. And that was just three bags of paper!

How would I ever sort through all the other things cluttering(亂堆放) my home and my life? It’s a question that has long been asked by most Americans. Thanks to an abundance of cheap goods, instant credit, and constant exposure to the powers of advertising, acquiring has in itself become a national pastime(消遣).“We’ve begun to buy and hold on to so many items that we’re now having to acquire more and more space to accommodate our clutter,” says Dr. David Kantra, a psychologist in Fairhope, Alabama. And accumulating goods is viewed as the road to happiness.

That idea became more obvious in the 20th century, as the power of advertising linked products to a lifestyle.“The message became ‘you are what you own,’ ” says Dr. Lorrin Koran, professor at Stanford University Center. Retailers(零售商) responded to that desire for ownership. Remember the general store? It used to stock about 1,000 items: that was all we needed. And there’s always the Internet. Last year, online shoppers spent﹩204 billion on goods: eBay alone reported sales of﹩59.7 billion on goods.

In the past 30 years, the size of the average American home has grown 53%, from 1,500 square feet to a little more than 2,300 square feet, which is an extra 800 square feet for things. But instead of becoming more organized with this space, homeowners have filled it up.

“We’re at a point where people don’t know how to make decisions about quantities of things and whether items serve a purpose,”says Laura Leist, the voice of a service industry that helps people clear the clutter from their homes.

A baby shower is a great way to welcome a new child and congratulate the new mother or the mother-to-be. Many mothers appreciate the help of purchasing the items they will need for their new babies. Commonly, baby showers are given only to new mothers. In this way, friends and families can help to give the family the things babies will need.

Baby showers are a tradition, but what happens at a baby shower is different. Sometimes, friends and family members will hold a baby shower for a new mother as a surprise. Often, a new mother will get several showers thrown for her first child from different groups, such as one from friends, one from the mother side of the family and maybe one from her friends at work. Regardless of how many, these get-togethers are a great way for people to welcome the new child.

Planning a baby shower can be a lot of fun. For baby shower ideas, try to search for websites that offer useful information to new parents. Some things to consider for your baby shower are baby shower invitations and baby shower favors. Other things to think about are baby shower decorations! Baby shower games can bring a boring party a lot of fun. Most of these baby shower games can even be free by using items from around your home. For example, you can take a roll of toilet paper with you to the party. Each guest has to guess how many individual sheets it will take to circle the mother-to-be. Besides, giving away small gifts can make these games even more fun.

Pull together some friends to plan a few baby shower games and make your own decorations for the mother-to-be! No matter how you plan a baby shower, remember your aim is to make the mother-to-be happy and feel loved.
