1. 可用作名詞或副詞，但要注意，用於 go, come, get, arrive, send, take, bring, return, drive 等表示運動的動詞之後的 home 是副詞，不能在其前用介詞 to。如以下各誤句中的 home前的介詞to應去掉：
誤：She was afraid to go home.
誤：He returned to home before dark.
在 on one’s way home 這類短語中，home 仍為副詞，所以其前也不用介詞 to。如：
I met an old friend of mine on my way home. 在我回家的'路上碰到一位老朋友。
但是值得注意的是，若 home 前有物主代詞修飾，home 則為名詞，其前可用介詞。如：
She went to her parents’ home. 她去了她父母家。
We arrived at the bride’s home. 我們到了新娘的家。
2. 正如上面已說，作為副詞 home 前不能用介詞 to，同樣也不用介詞 on, in 等。但值得注意的是，有時根據語義的需要量，其前可用at, from, near, for, without 等，如stay at home(呆在家裡)，far from home(離家很遠)，leave for home(動身回家)，without friends and without home(無親無友)，等。
3. 表示“在家”這一概念，注意以下用法：
(1) 英國英語一般用 at home, 而美國英語卻直接用 home(不用介詞)。如：
Telephone me this evening. I’ll be (at) home. 今晚給我打電話，我會在家。
(2) 英語可說stay at home, study at home, work at home等(在美國英語可以省略其中的介詞at)，但是英語習慣上不說arrive at home(其中的介詞at必須省略)。
(3) 表示“在……的家裡”，可用“at+所有格”這一形式，如at the Smiths’(在史密斯家)，at my uncle’s(在我叔叔家)，等。
(4) at home除表示“在家”外，還可表示(在規定時間)在家接待客人或指像在家一樣舒服自在。如：
He’s in, but he’s not at home. 他在家，但他不會客。
Make yourself at home. 請別拘束(別客氣)。
有時還可表示“熟悉”“精通”“運用自如”。如：
He is completely at home in chemistry. 他精通化學。
He is quite at home with problems like this. 這類問題對他是小菜一碟。
