其實不同的顏色在不同的語境中是有講究的。
red(紅色)：無論在英語國家還是在中國，紅色往往與慶祝活動或喜慶日子有關。英語裡有red-letter days(紀念日，喜慶的日子)，在西方一般指聖誕節或其他節日，因為這些日子在日曆上是用紅色標明的，所以red-letter的轉義就是“可紀念的”、“喜慶的”。(普通的`日子印的是黑色，但black-letter day卻不是“平常的日子”，而表示“倒黴的一天”。)又如to paint the town red表示“狂歡”、“痛飲”、“胡鬧”，多指夜生活中的狂歡作樂，飲酒胡鬧，不是“把全城染紅”。
White(白色)：對多數中國人和西方人來說，白色所引起的聯想有一些是相近的：purity(潔白), innocence(清白無辜)。但英語中的white lie 這個短語是什麼意思呢?謊言還能“清白”、“無罪”、“天真”或“單純”嗎?回答是：a white lie 指“不懷惡意的謊言”。
Black(黑色)：在英語和漢語中都有不少詞語表明black(黑)與“不好的”、“壞的”、“邪惡的”特徵相聯絡。如：blacklist(黑名單)，black market(黑市)，black-hearted(黑心的)，black sheep(害群之馬)等。
Blue(藍色)：在英語中藍色通常表示不快。如in a blue mood 或having the blues 表示“情緒低沉”、“憂鬱”、“沮喪”、“煩悶”，在a blue Monday(倒黴的星期一)中，blue 也表示類似的意思——過了愉快、幸福的週末，星期一又要上班或上學了，所以情緒不佳。如：It was blue Monday and he just didn't feel like going back to work.
Green(綠色)：除了green with envy ，英語中還有green-eyed monster和green-eyed，都表示“嫉妒”。可是，常用來表示“嫉妒”的漢語卻是“眼紅”(或“害了紅眼病”)，英語直譯為red-eyed,恰好與英語green-eyed相反。
有趣的是，在不同的語言中對同一物體或現象卻用不同顏色來加以描述。英國人喝的black tea在漢語中不叫“黑茶”而叫“紅茶”。美國人談到皮肉受傷時說be bruised black and blue, 而中國人則說“被打得青一塊，紫一塊”(直譯為：be beaten blue and Purple，當然應譯為地道的英語be beaten black and blue)。
當然有些詞語是有典故，比如black sheep--害群之馬。
Black sheep：a member of a group that stands in conspicuous and unfavorable contrast to the other members. From the proverb:there is a black sheep in every flock. Long times ago, white sheep were valuable than the balck ones. Because the fur of the black sheep was difficult to be dyed into other colors, so its practical value is relatively lower than the white ones. And people thought that the black sheep made other sheep afraid, so most owners didn't like black sheep. From 18th century, people began to call the family members those who are not popular a "black sheep".
