reply answer
這兩個詞都可作回答講,但用法有所區別。reply為正式用語,多指經過考慮的、有針對性的、詳細的'回答,常用作不及物動詞,和介詞to連用,其賓語為名詞或代詞,這時可以與answer互換;answer既可作及物動詞,又可作不及物動詞,常指口頭或書面的回答,是一般用語。如:
The old man smiled before he replied to my question.
老人在回答我的問題前笑了笑。
I cannot answer you now. 我現在不能回答你。
How shall I answer? 我該怎樣回答?
值得注意的是,answer可引申為應答之類的意義,這時不能用reply來代替。如:
answer the door (門鈴響了)去開門
answer the telephone 接電話
