英語中的定語從句起到了一個修飾的作用，作用相當於形容詞，那麼定語從句我們也稱之為形容詞性從句。同時，我們把定語從句分為兩類，一是限制性定語從句，一類是非限定性定語從句
那麼，什麼是限定性定語從句，簡單來講就是對所修飾的先行詞的意思加以限制，表示“…的人或是物”，例如：He is a man whom you should marry.在這個句子中，如果去掉定語從句whom you should marry.這個句子意思就不完整，甚至可以說是不成立了。
而非限定性定語從句，顧名思義，這類定語從句對於所修飾的事物沒有限制意義的作用，而起到一種補充說明和解釋的作用，與主句的關係並不密切，拿掉非限定性定語從句，主句意思照樣成立。例如：He is my father, who love me deeply.在這個句子中，如果去掉這個“who love me deeply.”非限定性定語從句，He is my father，這個主句照樣成立，意思也不會受到太大影響。而定語從句種類的不同，我們在翻譯的時候採用的翻譯方法也不盡相同。
１、 定語從句有時可以譯為並列分句，主要是指非限制性的定語從句：
１） Nearly everyone knows the story of ”the dog that worried thecatthat caught the rat thatatethe grain that lay in the house that Mr. Bubble built.”
幾乎人人都知道這個故事：“冒泡先生蓋了房，房裡堆了糧，耗子把糧食吃光，貓把耗子抓傷，狗又把貓逼上房。”
２） Thinking that you know when in fact you don’t is a fatal mistake to which we are all prone.
自認為知道而實際上並不知道，這是一個致命的弱點，我們都容易犯這種錯誤。
２、 倒譯法：
１） Yet he failed somehow, in spite of a mediocrity, which ought to have insured any man asuccess
按理說，他這樣的庸才，正該發跡才是，可是不知怎麼，只是不得意。
２） You have given Fieldstone, who dislikes me anyhow, the chance he was waiting for.
費爾德斯丁反正就不喜歡我，你給他的機會正是他求之不得的。
３、 譯為相當於英語中的狀語從句一樣的譯法：
１） How can anyone hope to be a qualified teacher, who doesn’t know what the students are thinking and demanding?
一個教師如果不知道他的學生在想什麼，需要什麼，怎能指望成為一個合格的教師呢？（譯為條件狀語從句）
２） The thief, who was about to escape, was caught by the policemen.
小偷正要逃跑時，被警察抓住了（當作時間狀語從句來處理）
４、 有時可譯為相當於漢語中的.謂語結構或賓語結構：
１） In recent years an interesting fact has been brought topublicattention: As educational levels, salaries, and the cost of living have increased, more and more people are now having fewer and fewer children to the point where schools in many cities have to close down.
最近幾年一個有趣的情況引起人們的注意：隨著教育水平、工資和生活消費的提高，越來越多的人不想多生孩子，已經到了許多城市的學校不得不關門的地步。（譯為相當漢語的謂語結構）
２） She knew the sequestered spots where the hens laid their eggs.
她知道母雞在什麼隱蔽的角落裡下蛋（譯為相當漢語中的賓語結構）
３） He had a lot of eggs to sell, which would have made he beloved anywhere.
他有許多金蛋蛋要賣，足以使他到處受到歡迎的。（謂語結構）
５、 譯成獨立句子：
１） There was another man who seemed to have answers, and that was Mr. Bubble.
另外一個人似乎胸有成竹，那就是冒泡先生。（溶合式）
２） Yonder are the Misses Leery, who are looking out for the young officers of the Heavies…
