  none/nobody (no, one)/nothing

◇ none既可指人又可指物,意為“沒有任何人或物;一個人也沒有”,後可跟of短語連用,作主語時,謂語動詞用單數或複數均可。例如:

—Have you bought any clothes?你買衣服了?

—None.一件也沒買。

None of us has/have been to Macao.我們沒有一個人去過澳門。

◇ no one=nobody,只能指人,意為“沒有人”;nothing只能指物,表示“沒有什麼(東西)”。它們不可與of短語連用,作主語時謂語動詞只能用單數。例如:

The summit meeting of the state heads came to an end two days later.

◇ gathering一般指非正式的集會,常用於群眾性的活動(像聯歡會等)。如:

◇ party指社交性或娛樂性的集會。如:

Mary and I were invited to Jane’s birthday party the other day.

merely; only; just

◇ 這三個詞作副詞表示 “僅、只”可以換用,並且都放在它們所修飾的成分之前,merely的用法較正式。 如:

Instead of answering,she merely/only/just smiled.

She’s come here just/only/merely to see you.

◇ 作形容詞時, only表示“僅有的”;mere表示“僅僅的、單單的”;just意為“公正的”。如:
