為什麼很多學生明明詞彙量還可以，做閱讀聽力基本不成問題，但作文依然沒法提高?筆者認為原因除了觀點邏輯方面欠缺以外，如何做到地道的英語表達也是亟待解決的一個問題。而在表達當中，對於詞彙的選擇使用則是廣大考生的關注點之一。在這一點上，很多人都抱有這樣的錯誤心態：只要詞用得越“高大上”考官就越喜歡，從而分數就越高。其實不然。我們總結一下雅思寫作評分標準對詞彙一項的要求後會發現寫作中用詞最重要的要抓住兩點：有效(effective)和準確(precise)。很多時候，往往你所認為的“高冷”單詞，用在某個語境當中會顯得非常不適宜不自然甚至不正確，反而給考官留下了不好的印象。這就是為什麼那些貌似詞彙量很大的考生依然寫不出好的文章。
我們來看一個例子：
If schools administered with anyteachers, disorder and lawlessness would arise.
這句話中看起來似乎用瞭如劃線部分這樣的“高階詞”，但實則只是讓整個表達變得非常彆扭不自然。我們修正一下，變為If schools were run without teachers, the behaviorof pupils would be much worse. 可以看到用詞難度下降了很多，但是整個句子變得清新自然從而更加準確有效。所以考生若想提高自身的英語表達就該先端正三觀，不要在追求“難詞”這條歧途上繼續走下去。
那究竟應該如何提高寫作的用詞水平呢?我認為學會單詞的搭配(collocation)才是王道。搭配即單詞間的自然慣用組合，學好搭配能幫助我們更自然準確地去用英語交流寫作。比如我們都知道“關注”叫做pay attention, 如果有人說“give attention”自然別人也能聽懂，但這樣的表達就非常不自然不地道。再說說上面的例子，“管理學校”最地道的搭配表達就是run a school, 如果用administrate就顯得非常做作不自然。因此，若想在真正意義上用好自己已知的詞彙來提高表達，我們就應該在平時寫作說話中不斷積累英語詞彙的搭配。在接下來的文章中，筆者會列舉若干例子來示範如何使用正確的搭配來改善你的寫作或口語表達。
