連詞是一種虛詞，用於連線單詞、短語、從句或句子，在句子中不單獨用作句子成分。連詞按其性質可分為並列連詞和從屬連詞。
從屬連詞是連詞的一種，用來引導名詞性從句和狀語從句。連詞用於引導從句以形成句子的一部分或修飾句子的構成要素。 由從屬連詞所引導的句子叫從句,而含有從句的句子叫作複合句。
從屬連詞可以大致分為兩大類：
名詞性從句裡的從屬連詞：
that，if，whether
狀語從句裡的從屬連詞：
before，after，since，if，because，though等。
引導名詞性從句的連詞：引導名詞從句的從屬連詞主要有that, whether, if，as if，as though，它們用於引導主語從句、表語從句、賓語從句和同位語從句。其中that 不僅沒不充當句子成分，而且沒有詞義，在句子中只起連線作用；而 if, whether 雖不充當句子成分，但有詞義，即表示“是否”，as if/as though，表示“似乎好像”。

引導條件狀語從句的`連詞：
if, unless, as [so] long as, in case，supposing that and so on
eg. Do you mind if I open the window?
Don’t come unless I telephone.
引導目的狀語從句的連詞：
in order that, so that, in case, for fear and so on
eg. He raised his voice so that everyone could hear.
引導結果狀語從句的連詞：
so that, so…that, such…that and so on
eg.I went to the lecture early so that I got a good seat.
