在有的場合恭維別人也是一種美德，只是不要說那些不是出於內心的話。當你認為這樣恭維最恰當時，那就多恭維他幾句，這就是所謂極好的恭維時機。只要恭維得恰當，自己發自內心羨慕對方，對方埋藏於內心的自尊心被你所承認，那他一定非常高興。
恭維時一定要有誠懇的態度。只有態度誠懇，購買者才對你的恭維感興趣，你才能收到理想的效果。如果你的恭維毫無誠懇之意，讓購買者感到虛偽，那麼這樣的恭維還是不要為好。

清朝末年著名學者俞樾在他的《一笑》中，講過這樣一個故事：有個京城的官吏，要調到外地上任。臨行前，他去跟恩師辭別。
恩師對他說：”外地不比京城，在那兒做官很不容易，你應該謹慎行事。”
官吏說：”沒關係。現在的人都喜歡聽好話，我呀，準備了一百頂高帽子，見人就送他一頂，不至於有什麼麻煩。”
恩師一聽這話，很生氣，以教訓的口吻對他的學生說：”我反覆告訴過你，做人要正直，對人也該如此，你怎麼能這樣?”
官吏說：”恩師息怒，我這也是沒有辦法的辦法。要知道，天底下像您這樣不喜歡戴高帽的`能有幾位呢?”
官吏的話剛說完，恩師就得意地點了點頭：”你說的倒也是”。
從恩師家出來，官吏對他的朋友說：”我準備的一百頂高帽，現在僅剩九十九頂了?
這雖然是個笑話，但卻說明了一個問題，就是誰都喜歡聽讚美的話，就連那位教育學生”為人要正直”的老師也未能免俗。
