因為正月是一年之始，廣州人往往將它看作是新的一年年運好壞的兆示期,因此過年的時候“禁忌”特別多。言語方面,凡是“破”、“壞”、“沒”、“死”、"光”、“鬼”、“殺”、“脖、“痛”、“輸”、“窮”等不吉利的字眼,都禁忌說出口來。也忌嬰兒啼哭,因為啼哭是“沒頭彩”，兆示疾並凶禍。故這一天即使小孩惹了禍，也不能打他或呵斥他，以免他啼哭不休。行為方面，端杯、盤、碗、碟要格外小心，不能打壞，不慎打壞時，在取水一俗已經徒有形式而已。禁掃地這一習俗也正在慢慢被淘汰，因為春節期間燃放鞭炮,人來客往，地上紙屑、垃圾特別多,不打掃一下的確有礙大雅。因此，從講究衛生出發，不少年輕人也就對這些傳統禁忌習俗不怎麼講究了。
這一天債主不許上門討債，因為人們認為這一天討債對借貸雙方均不吉利。也忌從別人口袋裡掏東西，人們認為，正月七年級的口袋讓人掏了，可能導致一年都被“掏空”的危險。
忌死人,也忌辦喪事,因為這將給家裡帶來不祥。同時，忌該天理髮，因為人們在這一,天總喜歡把理髮同辦喪事聯絡起來。這一天甚至忌殺生,殺生被認為會導致刀災、兵災、血災等災禍的發生，但是，現在人們生活水平提高了，吃東西圖個新鮮，為了口腹之快，也就沒什麼顧忌了。
飲食方面，這一天嚴禁吃藥。否則，被認為會導致一年從頭到底病疾纏身，吃藥不斷。七年級早飯忌吃葷，有幾種說法：一種是這一頓吃齋，其功用等於一年;另一種是暗喻指勤儉治家，不可鋪張浪費。此刻談論《潛水鐘與蝴蝶》跟《我要安樂死》，無疑既合時又不合時。說它合時，因為前者的電影版上映了，後者的作者斌仔也恰恰於上週的慈善節目裡現身。說它不合時，因為這城巿本來就有太多禁忌，在喜氣洋洋的春節裡更容不下多少哀號，或控訴。
