The Farm to School project is unique to SSIS. It was created to allow students to experience a hands-on approach to learn about sustainability and environmental awareness. The project also aims to support the holistic learning environment through the integration of academic and non-academic areas such as character building and physical well being of pupils.

Pupils learn how to take ownership of the garden; they tend to the garden, harvest seasonal produce, and enrich the garden plots by using the earthworm compost system. To add a bit of fun, pupils are always very excited about the Farm to School Awards that recognize classes that tend to the garden regularly and with the best yields. The types of vegetables and crops grown include spinach, rosa red lettuce, carrots, Italian lettuce, potatoes, cherry radish, lavender, sunflowers, pumpkins, and strawberries.

Holistic assessment at SSIS moves beyond just examinations to provide useful information that supports the child’s learning and holistic development. A child’s learning and development is tracked using a variety of assessments such as skills-based tests, subject-based tasks, examinations, project work, self-assessments, development portfolios etc. Parents will receive richer and more regular feedback to highlight the child’s strengths and areas of improvement.

The objective of STELLAR is to support both language and reading skills as well as promote a positive approach towards reading in the foundational years through the use of well-established, learner-centered and developmentally appropriate pedagogical approaches using authentic children’s literature. The aim is to move learners towards independence using quality children’s books and activities that motivate and engage young learners.

Students will receive three (3) Student Progress Reports and these will be distributed at the completion of each term. There will be one (1) parent/teacher conference (PTC) scheduled during the year as well as one (1) student-led conference (SLC). However, parents and teachers are encouraged to communicate often to ensure a child’s needs are being met. Parents are invited to arrange meetings with a teacher to discuss student development at a mutually convenient time.

The central goal of the mathematics curriculum is to ensure that all students achieve a level of mastery of mathematics that will serve them well in life and prepare them for the rigors of senior school. The aim of the mathematics curriculum is to enable students to acquire and apply mathematical concepts and skills and develop cognitive and metacognitive skills through a mathematical approach to problem solving. Students develop numeracy, reasoning, thinking skills and problem solving skills though the learning and application of mathematics.
