英語作為一門實用性很強的學科，英語的學習成果直接體現在資訊的交流上。而資訊的交流又集中表現為口語的運用。因此英語口語能力的提高既是英語學習的必然要求，也是社會、國家衡量人才合格與否的重要標準。
一般來說，衡量一個人英語口頭表達能力主要看以下幾個方面：
①語言的準確性（accuracy）和得體性（appropriateness）；
②語音（pronunciation）、語調（intonation）是否正確，口齒是否清楚；
③話語組織（discourse management）是否合理；口語表達的'流利程度（fluency）；
④語法（grammar）是否正確，用詞是否恰當，語言是否符合英語表達習慣。
這些是衡量英語會話能力的主要標準，針對這些標準，要提高英語口頭表達能力，就要採取相應的訓練方法，方法恰當了，就能起到事半功倍的效果。
那麼如何提高口語能力呢？英語學好英語口語，你應做到以下幾個方面：
1.一定的詞彙量是英語口語的基礎。 我們與人交流的前提是要聽懂別人在講什麼，因此我們在英語口語的練習中
首先要注意詞彙量的積累。其方式多樣，如閱讀、做題、聽錄音、看錄影或原文電影等，來擴大詞彙量、掌握英語的習慣表達方式，擴大知識面和訓練英語邏輯思維能力。這些訓練，可使我們熟練掌握常用的片語、短語等。只有
熟練，會話才能流利，與人交流才能不假思索地脫口而出。
2. 通過中西文化及語言的差異比較，設計日常口語會話情景，訓練日常口語會話。 要熟練掌握日常口語會話，就必須掌握範圍廣闊的、基本得當的日常用語，如怎樣表示想與陌生人交談；怎樣表示喜愛與厭惡，贊同與異議；怎樣問路與指路等。自己設計情景，組織會話，並進行反覆實踐。在實踐中仔細對比英語語言習慣、規律，文化背景等與漢語不同的地方，只有掌握了英語的語言文化才能更好地理解和運用英語。
3. 通過對日常生活題材的討論，逐步提高語言的組織能力。 對日常生活題材的討論是我們訓練口語能力的一個重要階段。在這個階段中，我們通過參加多種形式的討論活動與交流擴大知識面，促進思維能力及駕馭語言的能力。
4. 創造一個適當的語言環境。只有處於適當的語言環境中，語言的學習才能達到最好的效果。在平時的學習生活中，我們應尋找一切機會，有意識地鍛鍊自己聽和說方面的能力，堅持和有決心學英語的同伴每天用英語對話二三十分鐘，讓對方指出自己常犯的錯誤。其次應多聽英語磁帶，英語廣播，多參加英語沙龍和組織英語討論，多接觸英語讀物，造成潛意識的“聽”和“說”訓練，有助於矯
正口音上的偏誤。除以上所提方法之外，還可參加英語角、英語俱樂部、英語演講比賽、英語知識競賽等各種活動。這些活動能在不自覺中增強我們對英語的學習興趣，營造培養口語技能的良好環境，在不知不覺中提高我們的英語口語水平。
5. 聽力的培養不可忽視。 聽與說是一種相輔相成的關係，聽不明白就會給交流帶來很大的麻煩。
我們可通過進行大量模仿、背誦、複述等訓練正確的語音、語調，提高流利程度，培養英語語感
總之，英語的口語學習是長期的但不必是艱苦的，只要掌握良好的學習方法加之努力必將學有所成。
