大部分高校口語考試的第一部分是簡短的英文的自我介紹，自我介紹是你給導師的第一印象，大家都非常清楚我們沒有第二次機會給人第一次印象，所以要在短時間內，既能對自己的情況做出清楚的介紹，又能給老師深刻的印象，所以就要“言之有物、個性突出”。可以自己先提前寫好背熟，這部分基本是2到3分鐘，大概500字左右就可以。一般包括如下的內容：名字，原來畢業院校，在校期間取得的成績，平時的愛好興趣，現在所報考的專業，你為什麼報考該專業，你對該專業怎樣的感興趣，對當前該專業發展的簡短評價，以及你準備以怎樣的態度去研究該專業等等。一般情況下，如果老師看出你是在背事先準備好的材料，他會有意打斷你，問你一些其他的問題，測試一下你的反應能力。詞語的使用上，可以適當使用一些not only…but also、rather…than這樣的句型，可以增強表達的連貫性和邏輯性。另外還可以多用一些口語意味比較強的詞彙，使自我介紹更富有新鮮感。
在這一部分，建議考生一定要事先準備好自己要說的內容，但是在面試表達的過程中不能背誦的痕跡太重，要自然，隨意，讓導師相信是自己臨場構思和表達出來的，這樣的效果最好。
另外，口語考試的第二部分往往是常考話題，對有可能問到並展開的話題也要有所準備。可以事先閱讀一些相關文章，積累一些有關詞彙。導師常考的一些話題如談論下你的大學，家庭，朋友，你的優點和缺點，對未來的規劃，或者是考生所在地區的文化和風俗習慣，如氣候特徵，特色食品，婚慶習俗，重大節日，名勝古蹟，休閒娛樂等。這一部分也建議考生事先要準備好與自己相關的內容所涉及的'詞彙，基本句型等，臨場可以在此基礎上發揮，這樣總會比漫無目的、無針對性的回答要得體。
最後，口語考試常常還包括一個即興話題，話題隨機性和開放性比較大，例如“你認為幸福是什麼”、“你做過的最好和最壞的決定是什麼?為什麼?”“世界上如果沒有了電會怎樣?”，同時考生也要關心社會上發生的大事和時事。最好經常閱讀一些英文報刊和收聽英語廣播，或跟同伴及朋友一起討論一些話題。

第一個經常問的話題是考研原因通常我們可以從以下三個方面來回答。
1) 興趣，即強調對所報考的專業懷有極大的興趣(have significant interest in…)。如果本科就讀的專業與報考的專業一致，則可以說明想繼續深造(further education)的願望。如果不一致，則要說明報考專業對你的吸引力(…appeals to/attracts me a lot)。
2) 優勢，即強調研究生相對於本科生在知識、學術方面的優勢，如：知識面更廣(wider knowledge)，學術更專業(more professional)，眼界更廣闊等(broaden one’s horizon)。
3) 益處，即強調考研對你的未來的積極影響(have a positive effect on…)，可以從求職、職業規劃、人生經歷等方面入手進行說明。可參考的詞彙、短語如下：be helpful, contribute to, be beneficial to, be conductive to, be a definite advantage, become a strong point when it comes to…等等。

考官有時會詢問考生對未來的一些規劃，其目的在於試探考生是否對時間、學習、人生有一定計劃性和掌控能力。
1) 學習規劃。關於這一話題，考官通常會以一種較婉轉的方式提問，如：What do you expect to achieve during your study if you are enrolled into this university? 回答這一類的問題時，不僅僅要回答想學到什麼樣的知識、成為什麼樣的人，最好能夠稍微說說你會/計劃怎樣學習(即學習方法)。無論是傾向於學術理論性的還是側重於實驗研究性的，都要把握一個原則：理論聯絡實際，同時主次分明。
