英漢兩種語言，由於表達方式不盡相同，翻譯時既可能要將詞類加以轉換，又可能要在詞量上加以增減。增補法就是在翻譯時按意義上和句法上的需要增加一些詞來更忠實通順地表達原文的思想內容。這當然不是無中生有地隨意增詞，而是增加原文中雖無其詞而有其意的一些詞。
(1)增詞
1)增加名詞
經典例題: According to scientists，it takes nature500years to create an inch of topsoil. 參考譯文: 根據科學家們的看法，自然界要用500年的時間才能形成一英寸厚的表面土壤。
經典例題: From agreement on this general goal，we have，unfortunately，in the past proceeded to disagreement on specific goals，and from there to total inaction.
參考譯文: 遺憾的`是，過去我們在總的目標方面意見是一致的，但涉及各個具體目標時，意見就不一致了，因而也就根本不能採取什麼行動。(1987年)
2)增加動詞
經典例題: In the evening，after the banquets，the concerts and the table tennis exhibitions，he would work on the drafting of the final communiqué.
參考譯文: 晚上在參加宴會，出席音樂會，觀看乒乓球表演之後，他還得草擬最後公告。
經典例題: The cities utilize these funds for education，police and fire departments，public works and municipal buildings. 參考譯文: 市政府將這些資金用於興辦教育事業，加強治安消防，投資公共建築和市政工程。
3)增加形容詞
經典例題: With what enthusiasm the Chinese people are building socialism. 參考譯文: 中國人民正在以多麼高的熱情建設社會主義啊!
經典例題: The plane twisted under me，trailing flame and smoke. 參考譯文: 飛機在我下面旋轉下降，拖著濃煙烈焰掉了下去。
經典例題: What a sight!參考譯文：多美的景色啊!
4)增加副詞
經典例題: The crowds melted away. 參考譯文: 人群漸漸散開了。
經典例題: Theory is something，but practice is everything. 參考譯文: 理論固然重要，實踐尤其重要。
經典例題: He was fascinated by the political processes—the wheeling and dealing of presidential politics，the manipulating，releasing and leaking of news，the public and private talks.
參考譯文: 一幕幕政治花招使他看入了迷:總統競選活動中的勾心鬥角，爾虞我詐;對新聞訊息的幕後操縱，公開發表和有意透露，以及公開和祕密的談話。
5)增加表示名詞複數的詞
經典例題: When the plants died and decayed，they formed layers of organic materials. 參考譯文: 植物腐爛後，形成了一層層有機物。
經典例題: Things in the universe are changing all the time. 參考譯文: 宇宙中萬物總是在不斷變化的。
經典例題: There is enough coal to meet the world’s needs for centuries to come. 參考譯文: 有足夠的煤來滿足全世界未來幾個世紀的需要。
6)增加語氣詞
經典例題: Don’t be childish. I’m only joking. 參考譯文: 別孩子氣了嘛，這只不過是開玩笑罷了。
經典例題: As for me，I didn’t agree from the very beginning. 參考譯文: 我呢，從一開始就不贊成。
7)增加量詞
經典例題: A red sun rose slowly from the calm sea. 參考譯文: 一輪紅日從風平浪靜的海面冉冉升起。
8)增加概況詞
經典例題: It leads the discussion to extremes at the outset; it invites you to think that animals should be treated either with the consideration humans extend to other humans，or with no consideration at all.
參考譯文: 這種說法從一開始就將討論引向兩個極端，使人們覺得要麼就像關心自身一樣關心動物，要麼就完全不顧它們的死活。(1997年真題)
經典例題: The thesis summed up the new achievements made in electronic computers，artificial satellites and rockets. 參考譯文: 論文總結了電子計算機、人造衛星和火箭三方面的新成就。
經典例題: We have got great achievements militarily，politically and economically. 參考譯文: 我們在軍事、政治、經濟等方面取得了巨大的成績。
(2)邏輯加詞
1)增加連線詞
經典例題: Could you imagine what a fool I would make myself without that sum of money on me? 參考譯文：你能想象我要是身上沒帶那筆錢，該顯得多傻嗎?
2)增加承上啟下的詞
經典例題: Yes，I like Chinese food. Lots of people do these days，sort of the fashion. 參考譯文：不錯，我喜歡中國菜。現在很多人喜歡中國菜，這種情況算是有點趕時髦吧!
(3)語法加詞
增加表示時態的詞
經典例題: Humans have been dreaming of copies of themselves for thousands of years. 參考譯文：千百年來，人類一直夢想製造出自己的複製品。
經典例題: The high altitude plane was and still is a remarkable bird. 參考譯文: 高空飛行過去是而且現在仍還是一種了不起的飛行器。
