在做閱讀理解題時，有些考生往往拿不定主意，是先讀文章好還是先看問題好。其實不同的人有不同的習慣，同學們可量"題"而定，根據文章的難易程度和自己對文章的理解程度採用不同的解題步驟。
有的同學喜歡在做題過程中遇到困難再重讀與解題有關的文字，這種方法適合閱讀水平很高、記憶力較好的考生或閱讀簡單易懂的文章。由於人的大腦短期記憶有限，不可能記住全部內容和細節部分，我們讀"懂"文章就需要一定的時間，做題時，同學們還得回到文章重新閱讀相關部分，這樣一來很容易導致了時間的浪費，答案也未必精確。
也有部分考生喜歡帶著問題看文章，快速搜尋題目要求的資訊，並對所給選擇項進行是非判斷。理解細節型別的題，我們需注意選擇項中哪一項與段落中所給的資訊相對應，最終做出抉擇。凡屬對詞語或句子內涵的理解題，應根據上下文進行推斷。綜合歸納、邏輯推理的題，則需根據段落或文章的語篇意思加以理解，去粗取精、去偽存真、由此及彼、由表及裡的思考判斷。這類題往往涉及文章的主題、標題、作者的寫作意圖、作者對所論述事物的觀點等等。
這種方法的可取性在於"有的放矢"，目標明確，節省時間。帶著問題去找答案，這樣可以對與問題有關的內容多看、細看；對與問題無關的內容就粗略地一帶而過，甚至可以不看。這樣既提高了閱讀速度，又提高了答案准確率。這種有的放矢的方法也有其需要注意的地方，在不瞭解短文的結構、主題與細節分佈的情況下，如果考生不能很快地查詢到所需資訊，就會浪費珍貴的考試時間。
先快速閱讀短文以期獲得總體印象，然後閱讀問題，利用"尋讀"方法先解答在短文中能直接找到答案的細節和事實題。此種解題方法屬於保守的做題方法，收效一般都很好，考生在瀏覽文章的過程中瞭解到短文的體裁及題材、文章的結構模式，繼而分清短文的主題與細節。這種方法確保了答題的準確率。
眾所周知，這些文體的文章有一個共同的特點，即：用一系列的論據論證或說明一箇中心議題。文章結構大致三步：提出問題、論述問題、結論問題。
當然，這只是說這類文章最典型的寫法，並不意味著它們都是千篇一律地遵循這種模式，如：有些文章也許不直接提出問題，而僅僅在文後闡明結論；有些文章如果結論已自明的話，便不再重述結論；有些結論比提出問題部分表達得更明確或更進一步；有些則利用引述別人的看法或評價結束討論(尤其是新聞體文章)；等等。但是，無論哪種結構，大部分文章或者是遵循以上提到的這種論述方式，或者僅是這種模式的.變體。另外，議論文和說明文經常界限難分，彼此相互滲透。
無論從大綱所要求考生掌握的閱讀技能來看，還是從考題的命題角度來看，考生學會把握文章的主旨非常重要。只有把握住文章的主旨和各段的主題，考生才能把握某個區域性在上下文中的關係以及作者的觀點與態度，從而據此進行判斷、推理和引申。
因此，萬學海文建議考生採用上文提到的第二種閱讀方式：邊讀邊有意識地把握文章的結構和作者的推理過程，並在此基礎上考察具體細節，進行判斷和引申。
讓我們以2000年考題第三篇文章為例，概括地說明以上閱讀方式的含義和重要性：
When a new movement in art attains acertain fashion,it is advisable to find out what its advocates are aimingat,for,however farfetched and unreasonable their principles may seem today,itis possible that in years to come they may be regarded as normal.
