1. 表示做某事的想法，其後要接 of doing sth作定語，一般不接不定式。如：
I hate the idea of getting old. 我討厭變老這個想法。
The idea of parachuting out of a plane terrifies me. 一想到要從飛機上跳傘，我就感到很害怕。
其後雖然不直接跟不定式，但有時可接帶連接代詞或連接副詞的不定式。如：
I have no idea of how to do it. 我不知道如何做此事。

注意下面一句中idea後的不定式不是定語，而是主語：

2. idea 之後可接一個由 that 引導的同位語從句，用以説明idea的具體內容，此時的 that不能改用 which。如：
She had no idea that I was unhappy. 她不知道我不高興。

但是，如果其後接的是定語從句，則可以用which來引導，此時的which在定語從句中用作主語或賓語。如：
The idea which she put forward was interesting. 她提出來的想法很有趣。
3. 後接that引導的從句時，不用介詞 of;接續疑問詞引導的從句時，可用介詞of(也可省略)。如：
Have you any idea (of) when he will come? 你知道他什麼時候來嗎?
