Famed novelist Gabriel García Márquez passed away on Thursday, according to a family member cited by the Associated was 87 years old.

The Colombian Nobel Prize winning author was hospitalized for nine days in late March for an infection in his lungs and urinary had been recovering in his home in Mexico City since April 8.

García Márquez was born in Aracataca,Colombia on March 6, northern Colombian town inspired the setting for his 1967 novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, which earned international critical acclaim and tens of millions of ía Márquez earned even more fans with his 1985 book,Love in the Time of was considered by many to be the most popular Spanish-language writer since Miguel de Cervantes, who wrote Don Quixote in the 17th century.

García Márquez won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1982 for his novels and short he won the award,he called Latin America a “source of insatiablecreativity, full of sorrow and beauty,of which this roving and nostalgic Colombian is but one cipher more, singled out by s and beggars, musicians and prophets, warriors and scoundrels, all creatures of that unbridled reality,we have had to ask but little of imagination, for our crucial problem has been a lack of conventional means torender our lives believable.” He is credited with helping to invent the literary genre of magical realism.

He wrote that the ‘human mind is capable of excitement without the application of grossand violent stimulants’ it appears that simply reading those words by William Wordsworth prove his point.

Researchers at the University of Liverpool found the prose of Shakespeare and Wordsworth and the like had a beneficial effect on the mind, providing a 'rocket-boost' to morale by catching the reader's attention and triggering moments of self-reflection.

Using scanners, they monitored the brain activity of volunteers as they read pieces of classical English literature both in their original form and in a more dumbed-down,modern translation.

And,according to the Sunday Telegraph, the experiment showed the more 'challenging' prose and poetry set off far more electrical activity in the brain than the pedestrianversions.

The research also found poetry,in particular, increased activity in the right hemisphere of the brain,an area concerned with 'autobiographical memory',which helped the reader to reflect on and reappraise their own experiences in light of what they had cademics said this meant the classics were more useful than self-help books.

The brain responses of 30 volunteers was monitored in the first part of the research as they read Shakespeare in its original and 'modern' form.

In one example, volunteers read a line from King Lear,'A father and a gracious aged man: him have you madded',before reading the simpler.'A father and a gracious aged man: him you have enraged'.

其中一個例子是志願者閱讀《李爾王》中的一句臺詞,“A father and a gracious aged man: him have you madded”接下來他們又閱讀了一句簡單一點的版本,“A father and a gracious aged man: him you have enraged”。

Shakespeare's use of the adjective 'mad' as a verb caused a higher level of brain activity than the straightforward prose.

The next phase of the research is looking at the extent to which poetry can affect psychology and provide therapeutic nteers' brains were scanned while reading four lines by Wordsworth, and four 'translated' lines were also provided.

The first version caused a greater degree of brain activity, lighting up not only the left part of the brain concerned with language, but also the right hemisphere that relates to autobiographical memory and emotion.

'Poetry is not just a matter of is a matter of deep versions of experience that add the emotional and biographical to the cognitive,' said Prof Davis, who will present the findings at the North of England education conference in Sheffield this week.

One of the most interesting paradoxes in America today is that Harvard University, the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States,is now engaged in a serious debate about what a university should be,and whether it is measuring up.

Like the Roman Catholic Church and other ancient institutions,it is asking - still in private rather than in public - whether its past assumptions about faculty, authority, admissions, courses of study, are really relevant to the problems of the 1990s.

『Should Harvard or any other university be an intellectual sanctuary, apart from the political and social revolution of the age,or should it be a laboratory for experimentation with these political and social revolutions; or even an engine of the revolution? 』This is what is being discussed privately in the big clapboard houses of faculty members around the Harvard Yard.

The issue was defined by Waiter Lippmann,a distinguished Harvard graduate, several years the universities are to do their work,he said, they must be independent and they must be disinterested They are places to which men can turn for judgements which are unbiased by partisanship and special interest.『Obviously, the moment the universities fall under political control,or under the control of private interests,or the moment they themselves take a hand in politics and the leadership of government, their value as independent and disinterested sources of judgement is impaired.

Editors of newspapers and magazines often go to extremes to provide their readers with unimportant facts and year a journalist had been instructed by a well-known magazine to write an article on the president's palace in a new African the article arrived, the editor read the first sentence and then refused to publish article began: 'Hundreds of steps lead to the high wall which surrounds the president's palace.' The editor at once sent the journalist a fax instructing him to find out the exact number of steps and the height of the wall.

The journalist immediately set out to obtain these important facts, but he took a long time to send while, the editor was getting impatient, for the magazine would soon go to sent the journalist two urgent telegrams, but received no sent yet another telegram informing the journalist that if he did not reply soon he would be the journalist again failed to reply, the editor reluctantly published the article as it had originally been written.A week later, the editor at last received a telegram from the only had the poor man been arrested, but he had been sent to prison as ver,he had at last been allowed to send a cable in which he informed the editor that he had been arrested while counting the 1084 steps leading to the 15-foot wall which surrounded the president's palace.

These days, people who do manual work often receive far more money than clerks who work in le who work in offices are frequently referred to as' white collar workers' for the simple reason that they usually wear a collar and tie to go to is human nature, that a great many people are often willing to sacrifice higher pay for the privilege of becoming white collar can give rise to curious situations,as it did in the case of Alfred Bloggs who worked as a dustman for the Ellesmere Corporation.

When he got married,Alf was too embarrassed to say anything to his wife about his simply told her that he worked for the y morning,he left home dressed in a smart black then changed into overalls (n.工作服) and spent the next eight hours as a re returning home at night,he took a shower and changed back into his did this for over two years and his fellow dustmen kept his 's wife has never discovered that she married a dustman and she never will, for Alf has just found another will soon be working in an office as a junior will be earning only half as much as he used to,but he feels that his rise in status is well worth the loss of now on,he will wear a suit all day and others will call him 'gs',not 'Alf'.

Don’t Work for Money

The world is filled with smart, talented, educated and gifted meet them every day.A few days ago,my car was not running well.I pulled it into a garage, and the young mechanic had it fixed in just a few knew what was wrong by simply listening to the engine.I was sad truth is,great talent is not enough.

I am constantly shocked at how little talented people earn.I heard the other day that less than 5 percent of Americans earn more than $100,000 a year.A business consultant who specializes in1 the medical trade was telling me how many doctors, dentists and chiropractors struggle this time,I thought that when they graduated, the dollars would pour was this business consultant who gave me the phrase,“They are one skill away from great wealth.” What this phrase means is that most people need only to learn and master one more skill and their income would jump exponentially.I have mentioned before that financial intelligence is a synergy of accounting, investing, marketing and ine those four technical skills and making money with money is it comes to money, the only skill most people know is to work hard.

When I graduated from the hant Marine Academy in 1969,my educated dad was dard Oil of California had hired me for its oil-tanker fleet.I had a great career ahead of me,yet I resigned after six months with the company and joined the Marine Corps to learn how to educated dad was dad congratulated me.

Job security meant everything to my educated ning meant everything to my rich ated dad thought I went to school to learn to be a ship’s dad knew that I went to school to study international as a student,I made cargo runs, navigating 6 large freighters, oil tankers and passenger ships to the Far East and the South e most of my classmates, including Mike, were partying at their fraternity houses,I was studying trade, people and cultures in Japan,Thailand,Singapore,Hong Kong,Vietnam,Korea and the Philippines.I also was partying, but it was not in any frat house.I grew up rapidly.

There is an old cliché that goes,“Job is an acronym9 for ‘Just Over Broke.’” And unfortunately,I would say that the saying applies to millions of use school does not think financial intelligence is intelligence, most workers “live within their means.” They work and they pay the ead I recommend to young people to seek work for what they will learn, more than what they will down the road at what skills they want to acquire before choosing a specific profession and before getting trapped in the “Rat Race” people are trapped in the lifelong process of bill paying, they become like those little hamsters running around in those little metal r little furry legs are spinning furiously, the wheel is turning furiously, but come tomorrow morning, they’ll still be in the same cage: great job.

When I ask the classes I teach,“How many of you can cook a better hamburger than McDonald’s?” almost all the students raise their hands.I then ask,“So if most of you can cook a better hamburger, how come McDonald’s makes more money than you?” The answer is obvious: McDonald’s is excellent at business reason so many talented people are poor is because they focus on building a better hamburger and know little or nothing about business world is filled with talented poor too often, they’re poor or struggle financially or earn less than they are capable of,not because of what they know but because of what they do not focus on perfecting their skills at building a better hamburger rather than the skills of selling and delivering the hamburger.
