材料作文是指命題者向考生提供某種具體材料，要求依據這些材料運用某種方式進行寫作。材料的內容多種多樣：有書面讀物，有生活情景;有文字的、有圖畫的……考生要根據材料要求，針對材料特點和作文要求，進行寫作。
寫“給材料”作文，應該注意把握好以下幾點：
一是認真閱讀材料，準確把握題意。
正式寫作前，首先要認真閱讀這些材料，把握材料的內涵與要旨，搞懂命題所提出的寫作要求，準確地理解和掌握題意，然後據此寫作。否則，寫起來就會發生偏差，不合命題要求，甚至出現離題現象。
二是緊扣材料要求，把握寫作重點。
在讀懂材料內容、明確寫作要求的基礎上，要緊緊圍繞材料和要求來構思如何寫作。除了要明確寫作的文體要求之外，還必須緊扣材料的中心內容、正確把握寫作重點，尤其是文題中的關鍵性詞語所提示的寫作要求。如果我們對材料所提出的關鍵內容理解不透、不深，題目中的限制條件也不能在文章中表現出來，應當寫的重點都未寫，就會使文章內容遊離於材料和題目之外，這就不合要求了，自然不會寫出好文章。
