一、結構分析
強調結構中的it is (was)…that (who)…為使一個非強調句變成強調句的結構詞，在通常情況下，去掉它，句子依然是成立的——這是判斷一個句子是否為強調結構的重要標誌。如下面這個句子是強調句，因為去掉it was…that…後句子依然成立，且意思一致：
It was my mother who finally called the police. 最終報警的是我母親。
→My mother finally called the police. 最終報警的是我母親。
請看下面一句，空白處是填that還是其他的什麼詞?
It was ten o'clock _______ he returned home.
此處不能填that，因為若填that把它視為強調句，那麼就可以去掉it was…that…而使句子結構完整，意思不變，事實上並非如此，因為我們是不能說Ten o'clock he returned home的，除非改為At ten o'clock he returned home才是正確的。
比較下面兩句(第1句不是強調句，但第2句是強調句)：
It was ten o'clock when he returned home. 他回家的時候已是10點鐘了。
It was at ten o'clock that he returned home. 他是10點鐘回家的。
二、時態一致問題
一般說來，強調結構it be…that…中的be的時態應與句子時態一致，即同時用現在時，或同時用過去時，有時也可能用將來時。如：
It is not I who am angry. 發怒的不是我。(同時用現在時)
It was my two sisters who knew her best. 是我的兩個姐妹最瞭解她。(同時用過去時)
It will not be you who will have to take the blame for this. 對此須受責難的將不是你。(同時用將來時)
但有時也可以不一致，這主要見於強調結構用it is…that…(即用的是現在時)，而句子用的是過去時。如：
It is Miss Williams who enjoyed reading novels as a pastime. 是威廉姆斯小姐以讀小說來消遣。
句子結構比較複雜時，尤其是當被強調成分比較複雜時，有的同學們就不能識別句子所用的強調結構，從而不能正確作出選擇。如：
It was lack of money, not of effort, that defeated their plan. 他們的`計劃受挫，原因是缺少錢而不是沒有盡力。
It was more in sorrow than in anger that he criticized his former colleague. 他批評以前的同事，並非出於氣憤而是為他惋惜。
It is the protection for the trees that really matters, rather than how many trees are planted. 真正重要的在於對樹木的保護，而不在於種了多少樹。
As far as he's concerned, it's not doing something wrong that matters, but not being caught doing something wrong, 就他而論，重要的不是做錯事，而是做錯事不被抓住。

答案為A。被強調成分為what you do rather than what you say，全句意為：重要的是看你怎麼做，而不是看你怎麼說。
