1. 表示“總 (的)”，注意以下用法：
(1) 常見修飾的名詞有。
如：the general population 總人口 thegeneral line 總路線 a general manager 總經理 general editor總編輯，主編 general strike 總罷工 general mobilization 總動員 general policy 總方針 general comment 總評 generalrules 總則 the general branch 總支部 the general plan 總計劃
(2) 有時譯為“大”。
如：a general elect 大選 a general meet-ing 全體大會 the UN General Assembly 聯合國大會 the generalsituation 大局 general idea 大意，大概
(3) 與職位名詞連用，通常置於其後，意為“總…”、“…長”。
如：Secretary General 祕書長 Postmaster General 郵政總長，郵務部長 a consult general 總領事
但也有個別的情況是置於職位名詞之前。

2. 表示“普遍的”、“公眾的”、“一般的'”等義，主要用作定語。
如：the general public 公眾，一般公眾 the generalfeeling 多數人的感覺 general education 普通教育 general education generalknowledge 一般性知識，常識 general impression 大致印象 thegeneral idea 大概的想法
有時也用作表語。
如：The fog was general. 到處都是霧。
Rainyweather is general in June. 六月一般都是下雨的天氣。
3. 用於 in general, 意為“一般說來”、“總的說來”、“通常”等。有以下用法：
(1) 用作狀語。
如：In general the plan is good. 總的說來，這個計劃是好的。
The weather in Florida is warm in general. 一般說來弗羅裡達州的天氣是暖和的。
He was in general quite glad togo. 總的說來，他還是很樂意去。
(2) 放在複數名詞後作定語。
如：放在複數名詞後People in general like her. 人們一般都喜歡她。
Children in general are fond of candy. 小孩子一般都喜歡吃糖。
4. 用作名詞，表示“將軍”，可用於稱呼。
如：Here’s the report, General. 將軍，這是報告。
This is General MacArthur. 這是麥克阿瑟將軍。
5. 派生詞generally adv. 通常地，一般地，普遍地。
