1.利用動詞片語中的介詞或副詞確定正確選項
命題人員想考查考生是否掌握了某一動詞片語的用法，在設計四個選項時，有時會讓一個動詞出現在四個選項中，只是後邊的介詞或副詞不一樣。在做這一類題時，如果我們認識某一片語，根據自己的判斷毫不猶豫地選擇你認為是正確的選項。如果不認識或拿不準片語的意義，我們可以根據上下文以及動詞後邊的介詞或副詞進行推導。
1)Having decided to rent a flat, we ___ contacting all the accommodation agencies in the city
A)set about B)set down C)set out D)set up
本題的答案為A)。本句前邊說“已經決定租房，我們聯絡房屋中介商……”這裡需要填“開始”的意思。從動詞後的4個介詞來說，只有about有表示“將來”(be about)的意思，所以A為正確答案。需順便補充的是，set about結構中，about是介詞，因此它後面如果跟動詞，需要用動詞的-ing形式。
2)When he realized the police had spotted him, the man ___ the exit as quickly as possible.

本題的答案為B)。這裡空格處要填的是表示“走向”之意，這裡只有"for"表示在同一水平線上“向……方向”。注意，句中有exit一詞，表示the man是在一建築物內，所以不可能用out the exit(注意上下文)，而且out是一個副詞，後面接名詞時需要有介詞of，所以正確選項是B)而不是C)。
2.利用動詞片語中的動詞確定選項
有些題的四個選項中的介詞或副詞一樣，而動詞不同，這時我們就可以利用動詞的區別來確定正確選項，如下例：

由於句子之間語義的'關聯，句中一部分有時對另一部分構成解釋關係，我們可以根據已經明示的部分來確定選項。
