In China, a lot of people complain that English is so difficult to learn. They even spend a lot of time to study grammar, still can’t speak English fluently. But as China becomes stronger, more and more foreigners start to learn mandarin. Chinese and English are in the different language family, so the foreigners struggle to learn mandarin, and most people give up after a few days’ learning. For some who can speak a little, they complain that Chinese is the most difficult language to learn. There are four tones and it is hard for them to figure out. But there are still some foreigners learn Chinese so well. Therefore, if they can do it well, why don’t we complain. All we need to do is to keep practicing and find the best way to master another language.

we are the generation brought up with the sino-japanese relationship as neighbours separated by a strip of water . as we all know, china and japan, are the two most important nations in east asia, whose trade has been so tightly bound with each other.

two days ago ,i read an article about sino-japanese relationship. according to the author, china and japan ,should abandon their mutually hostile attitudes on matters of history and politics and achieve agreement in some important fields. china and japan should have learned more from germany and france, which two have already achieved reconciliation and held hands together. however, due to the special history and character of the two nations, it is indeed very hard to imagine the chinese and the japanese doing the same. that is to say, there are still many obstacles, which are quite different from those between germany and france, existing in the way towards the true reconciliation.

i do agree with the author that china and japan should achieve a kind of reconciliation. but i find that the chance for such a reconciliation is quite e are mainly two reasons supporting this opinion.

firstly, from the part of china, it will be quite difficult or even impossible for the chinese to totally put aside the suffering memory, not to mention forgive and reconcile with the japanese.

secondly, from the side of japan, conditions are almost equally complex and ared with the brutal deeds of the japanese army, the apology given by the prime minister seems too superficial . it could hardly heal the mental and spiritual wound of the asian people, not to mention solve the dispute between china and japan.

in a word, due to the special history and character of the two nations, i do think the chance for the reconciliation is quite slim. we still have a long way to go.

i chose to read the novel this winter vacation. i did not mean to read this one, because the author is gustave flaubert, a frenchman, so the english version can’t be the original. i think the purpose for which our english teacher wants us to read the english novel is to let us experience what is real english. so reading a french novel in english is the same as reading an english novel in chinese. i remember one sentence in our english textbook like this: no matter how well a poem is translated, something of the spirit of the original is lost. so is a novel. what a pity that i could not read an english original!

i read the gist of the story when i was in primary school. it is a story of how a beautiful woman dies. madame bovary is beautiful but her husband is not handsome and romantic. he is a doctor. he loves his wife with all his heart, but he does not know how to give her the kind of love she wants. not being satisfied, madame bovary starts to find a lover who is both handsome and romantic. and she finds léon at last. she spends all the money her father and her husband give her on her lover, and lives the kind of life she has always dreamed of, paying no attention to the fact that all the people in town regard her as a vampire. happy days are always short however. léon leaves her at last. and her heart breaks in pieces. there is no other way except to die. what a pity that such a beautiful lady dies in such a way!

i hated madame bovary so much when i read the gist many years ago, because monsieur bovary loves her so much but she treats him in such a rude way in return, in spite of the fact that she used to study in the convent. each one in the marriage should fulfil the vows they swore at the wedding ceremony. one madame should be staunch to her husband, no matter how boring it is to be with him. anyway he is the one you chose when you want to get married. that was the opinions i had at that after reading the novel, i think madame bovary has her own embarrassments which are hard to mention, too. monsieur bovary only loves her beautiful and distinguished appearance. no one in this family cares about what she thinks. no one asks about her feelings. no one wants to listen to her aspirations. what a lonely lady! the most important thing is that the life after marriage does not answer to her dream. the only feeling she has is disappointing. it is hard for a lady to bear.

My Vexation

When I got home, I was very surprised to find my mother reading my diary。 I was too angry to say a word。

My eyes were swimming in tears。

As soon as my mother saw me, her face turned red and she said to me, “Sorry! My daughter! I…I only want to …” I didn’t want to hear her excuse。 I need to have my own secrets and my parents should respect that。

There is an old man living next to my house. I can see him every day when I walk down the street. He sells shoes every day and he has done the business for more than 20 years. Most people have changed their career but only he insists. I admire him because he sells shoes no matter rain or shine. He loves his job and has a nice talk to his customers.

By the mid-nineteenth century, the term icebox had entered the American language, but ice was still only beginning to affect the diet of ordinary citizens in the United States. The ice trade grew with the growth of cities. Ice was used in hotels, taverns, and hospitals, and by some forward-looking city dealers in fresh meat, fresh fish, and butter. After the Civil War,as ice was used to refrigerate freight cars, it also came into household use. Even before 1880,half of the ice sold in New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, and one-third of that sold in Boston and Chicago, went to families for their own use. This had become possible because a new household convenience, the icebox, a precursor of the modern refrigerator, had been invented.

Making an efficient icebox was not as easy as we might now suppose. In the early nineteenth century, the knowledge of the physics of heat, which was essential to a science of refrigeration, was rudimentary. The commonsense notion that the best icebox was one that prevented the ice from melting was of course mistaken, for it was the melting of the ice that performed the cooling. Nevertheless, early efforts to economize ice included wrapping up the ice in blankets, which kept the ice from doing its job. Not until near the end of the nineteenth century did inventors achieve the delicate balance of insulation and circulation needed for an efficient icebox.

"singles day" falls on every november 11th and is celebrated only in china. it is a festival exclusively for singles. to find out more about this festival, read on. "singles day" falls on every november 11th, and as the name indicates, this relatively new holiday is one exclusively for people who are still living the single life. i was a bit surprised when i googled 'singles day' on the internet, to find that china is the only country in the world that has set aside a special day for singles to celebrate their lives. to find out more about this celebration, read on.

origin of singles dayan old story goes that once there were four single men, leading very boring lives. none of them were married, or had lovers, or did anything exciting. they just sat around all day and played mahjong.

one day they played mahjong from 11 in the morning until 11 at night. during the game, no matter who won, the winning card was always the 'four columns' card (the card shows four independent, parallel columns in two lines). even more of a coincidence, it was nov 11, or 11/11. in order to commemorate the day, they nicknamed it "singles day".

university culture"singles day" was first celebrated at various universities in nanjing, capital city of jiangsu province during the 1990s. it got the name "singles day" because the date is comprised of four "ones". these college students have since graduated, and carried their university tradition into society. singles day is now a special day for all fashionable youths.

the main way to celebrate "singles day" is to have dinner with your single friends, but it's important that each person pay their own way to show their independence. people also hold 'blind date'parties in an attempt to bid goodbye to their single tive celebration for breakfast on "singles day", singles often eat four youtiao (deep-fried dough sticks) representing the four "ones" in "11.11" and one baozi (steamed stuffed buns) representing the middle dot.

many singles also choose to say goodbye to their single lives on this day. many attend 'blind date' parties and many people choose to marry on this day. in addition to meaning 'single' the four 'ones' of the date can also mean 'only one' as in 'the only one for me.' some people will use this date and this meaning to tell their special someone that they are the only 'one' in their heart.
