這些動詞均有“保護、保衛”之意。
defend : 普通用詞，指用武力或其它措施使人或物不受損害，消除危險。用作比喻時，指堅持某種行動、決定或意見。
The American navy would defend and patrol the Western Hemisphere.（美國海軍將防禦和巡邏西半球。）
protect : 普通用詞，指用某種手段作為防禦工具以防危險或傷害。
The troops were there to protect the townspeople.（部隊駐紮在那裡以保護市民。）
safeguard : 語氣強，指採取積極措施預防可能發生的一切攻擊或危險。
Their political rights must be safeguarded.（他們的政治利益必須得到保證。）
guard : 普通用詞，指保持警惕以防可能的'攻擊或傷害。
The soldiers guarded the prince whenever he left the palace.（每當王子離開皇宮, 士兵們都要保護他。）
shield : 語氣比protect強，但側重防止迫在眉睫的攻擊或傷害。
