赴美國留學本科獎學金申請時，首先要了解一下美國大學獎學金的概念，實際上，所謂美國大學獎學金應稱為 經濟資助(financial aid)，這些獎學金主要是基金會、公司、或私人捐助給學校的，金額從五百美元到十幾萬美元不等，大部分限制只提供給美國公民，供給國際學生的很少。
美國大學獎學金髮放物件主要為兩類學生人群，第一類是高中畢業申請美國本科的學生;另一類是以研究為目的到美國繼續深造的研究生與博士生。
美國大學本科獎學金分類：
1. Need-Based
Financial aid that is need-based depends on your financial situation. Most government sources of financial aid are need-based.
該項獎學金的發放標準是根據學生家庭的經濟收入的高低，包括父母工資，家庭財產狀況等。Need-based獎學金對於美國本國申請者來說非常豐厚。但是對於國際學生來說，只有少部分大學提供，絕大部分的大學僅有少量甚至沒有Need-based獎學金供國際學生申請。
2. Merit-based
Financial aid that is merit-based depends on your academic, artistic or athletic merit or some other criteria, and does not depend on the existence of financial need. Merit-based awards use your grades, test scores, hobbies and special talents to determine your eligibility for scholarships.
該項獎學金是以申請人自身具備的學術成績，思想品質，發展潛力等實力因素來決定。並不考慮經濟上是否需要幫助，只要學校認可申請者的學術背景，都會給予獎學金。該獎學金並不侷限於美國本土的學生申請，而是針對大部分申請者。
3. Need-Blind
Under need-blind admissions, the school decides whether to make an offer of admission to a student without considering the students financial situation. Most schools use a need-blind admissions process. A few schools will use financial need to decide whether to include marginal students in the wait list.
美國有很多資金實力雄厚的私立大學，在錄取的時候不考慮學生是否需要學校提供資助，即申請獎學金於否對申請沒有任何影響。如果學校認為申請人符合錄取標準，就根據學生的家庭情況做出判斷：該學生家庭能夠承擔多少費用，其餘全部由學校設法提供。美國的很多私立名牌學校都執行需求無關的'政策，例如哈佛大學，耶魯大學，普林斯頓大學等。
以上是美國本科獎學金的申請介紹，而我們通常還會看到Fellowship和Graduate Assistantship這樣的字眼, 以及Graduate Assistantship下的Teaching Assistantship (俗稱的 ‘TA’)和Research Assistantship (俗稱的 ‘RA’)，他們均屬於服務性獎學金，這種獎學金只提供給碩士或博士申請者，獲此獎學金者需在校擔任每週12-20小時的輔助教學或研究工作。本科生在少數學院也能獲得助研金，但比率相對很小。
