南希透露，她之所以決定邀請這幾位好萊塢老一輩明星擔任封面女郎，是受到了2004年4月份出版的時尚雜誌《名利場》的啟發。她注意到，幾乎所有封面女郎的年齡都小於40歲。南希說：“人們經常說任何年齡的人都可以是美麗的;然而，事實卻並非如此。你知道，好萊塢的遊戲規則可並沒有向人們傳達這一資訊。”於是，南希決定為年齡較大的婦女樹立全新的形象，便有了這期雜誌封面的誕生。
哈佛大學醫學院的心理學家南希·埃特科夫表示，作為一種文化，人們已經逐漸改變了對“衰老”與“美麗”之間關係的看法。她說：“即使是在近代，35歲的女性就被認為已經是年老的人了。然而，現在的35歲就相當於曾經的25歲;40歲則相當於30歲。”不過，南希同時表示，要讓六、七十歲成為人們心目中的“黃金年齡”仍然尚需時日。
曾是著名舞臺劇演員和電影演員的瓊斯，在20世紀70年代因出演電視劇《帕特里奇一家》中的媽媽雪莉·帕特里奇一角而家喻戶曉。瓊斯從未做過整容手術，今後也不打算去整容。

Editor Nancy Perry Graham says she hopes the March/April issue, which begins arriving in 22 million homes Tuesday, will help boost the image of older women.
She got the idea while looking at the April 2004 Vanity Fair cover on actresses and noticed that most of the women shown were under 40.
"It"s so easy to say you can be beautiful at any age, but in our society, you know Hollywood doesn"t send that image at all," she says.
So she"s trying to send a new image. The spare-no-expense photo shows actresses Cloris Leachman, 78; Joanne Woodward, 74; Rita Moreno, 73; Shirley Jones, 70; Patty Duke, 58; Kathy Bates, 56; and Marcia Gay Harden, 45, in designer gowns and draped with Harry Winston diamonds.
As a culture, we"re already shifting our views of aging and beauty, says Nancy Etcoff, psychologist at Harvard Medical School and author of Survival of the Prettiest.
"If you look back in very recent history, someone 35 was already considered old," she says. "And now 35 is where 25 was. And 40 is the new 30."
But it will still be a while before 60 and 70 are considered hot, she says.
The magazine cover will "make people think," she says. But "for things to take hold, they really have to come from multiple sources."
Jones, the stage and movie actress best known for playing TV mom Shirley Partridge in the 1970s sitcom The Partridge Family, is happy to get the ball rolling.
